Yesterday at Armistice Day in Westminster, central London you could cut the atmosphere with a knife. Sensing it was only a short time after the mornings formalities before the trouble started. This due to the anger of Far Right protesters because of the Pro- Palestine demonstration allowed to take place on such a patriotic day. I was commissioned by The Sunday Telegraph to capture the colour around the annual commemoration.
The two minute silence at 11.00 was only a formality for the thugs until they’d had enough drink to fight. I was soon the only editorial photographer at the Churchill statue which has become a meeting point for the far right on this precious day. Soon a hundred fans chanting “F**k off cameraman, F**k off cameraman, F**k off cameraman” at me, easy picking considering I was the only photographer left there. Physically removed after an altercation with one of the intoxicated thugs pushing me off the pavement, telling me he was going to “smash my cameras”. Within minutes after this, the crowd of far right protesters surged towards Westminster Bridge after spotting a group of Pro-Palestine protesters. Only getting as far as the line of Police officers. Chaos and fighting between the demonstrators and Police officers broke out. It was an ugly sight.
