One of the great pleasures of working as an editorial photographer is meeting all the wonderful characters out there. Throughout April I’ve been working across the UK photographing all different types of events and getting to meet some amazing people.
British enthusiasts
One character that springs to mind is Dell Watson. British scooter and ska music enthusiast. I met him whilst on a commission to photograph the Classic Car Boot Sale in Kings Cross, London. The event was curated by Wayne Hemingway, founder of Red Or Dead label and Design Council Trustee.
One Step Beyond
The event is always a spectacle of all things vintage. Enthusiasts and traders bring together classic cars, vintage clothes, music, bric-a-brac, and a display of classic scooters. As the scooters lined up I was admiring the Lambretta covered with mirrors and two tone band Madness badges. Dell the owner was equally photogenic with his Harrington jacket and matching sta prest trousers. He was a little embarrassed to be photographed, especially when all the amateur photographers crowded behind me waiting until I’d positioned Dell and set up the frame for this street portrait. Then all of the snappers attempt to copy my shot.
All Mod Cons
I did wonder if Dell was Sunday Telegraph material. So I must admit I was a little surprised to see this photograph published ahead of other photographs I took on the day. Nice to meet you Dell, hopefully, see you at the next Vintage meeting.
