Exciting news that my thermic welding photo reportage has received an Award of Excellence at the Institute of Internal Communication National Awards this year.
National Awards 2017: Shortlist Announced
The set of images shot for London Underground’s staff publication ‘On the Move’ is now in the running to take top spot in it’s class. Winners are announced at the Awards Dinner at the Intercontinental Hotel Park Lane, London on 29 September 2017.
In April 2016 I was commissioned to join a team of London Underground rail replacement engineers during their graveyard shift. Walking approximately a mile through the tunnels each night the engineers have the task of replacing the steel rails. A continual project for Transport for London. The only time this can be carried out is during the night once the line is closed and the power if off!
The physical effort of carrying tools and kit down the line and transporting the steel rails into place makes for a tough job. Once the old sections of rail are removed then new sections are welded into position using the thermic welding technique.
For this commission I shot everything available light and also shot a short film.
