I was there to capture group sessions and guest interaction
Commissioned by The National Lottery Community Fund to photograph the Over 50 Black Men’s Forum (O5BM) in Essex, UK. It was a friendly atmosphere within the community hall where over a hundred black men aged over 50 met. I was there to capture the day during the first aid work shops and whilst the men shared ideas and address the issues that matter to them. I’m used to working in these types of environments, making myself invisible in the background even whilst pointing a camera into areas where personal, private issues are being discussed between members of a community.
Shooting projects for The National Lottery Community and Heritage Fund for over 15 years
Not all photographers are comfortable working in these types of situations, but with my background and experience I understand the sensitivity and limits of how to work on assignments such as these and am able to judge when or not to raise the camera. I’ve been shooting projects for The National Lottery Community and Heritage Fund for over 15 years and always enjoy meeting ethnic communities and learning about the varied cultures living in the United Kingdom.
The day featured interactive breakout sessions providing opportunities to photograph the various groups engaging as well as speakers during presentation segments of the day. Not forgetting the amazing food I was invited to enjoy with the group after the event finished.
The photographs have been used for pop-up stands, reports, website and social media purposes
