Lights… Cameras… Action…but where are all the fashion spectators?
During February I was lucky enough to be one of the few photographers given access to photograph London Fashion Week. Normally backstage is a buzz of activity with media stepping over one-another to get shots of all the latest styles. Only due to the coronavirus lockdown measures this February everything was set out enabling social distancing with only a handful of media allowed to attend.
After such a long period of not being able to photograph live events it felt quite surreal photographing the build up to an actual live show. Over the years I have photographed many of the top hairdressers for PRO Hair & Beauty Magazine, and enjoy photographing these hair magicians creating wonderful hair styles. There was no shortage of top class hair stylists backstage at Mark Fast’s AW21 show.
It was when taking my position front of house that it became apparent that we are still a long way from normality. No fashion spectators allowed into any of the AW21 shows. The models having to walk down the runway to show off the collection to a near solitary room empty except for a handful of photographers and videographers. This years AW21 was to be a virtual affair. For the photographs it gave a very different setting. Similar to models walking through an empty aircraft hanger with the backdrop of Canary Wharf’s skyscrapers through the windows in the distance.
